from the broken [water] jar

we must dream backward, toward the
fountain, we must row centuries upstream,
beyond infancy, beyond the beginning,
beyond the waters of baptism,
to break down the walls between [each other], to
join anew what has been separated,
life and death are not opposite worlds, they are
one single stem with twin flowers
we must dig up the lost word, dream inwardly
as well as outwardly,
we must decipher the night's tattooing and look
face to face at noon and tear its mask away
